Omnisend Emails Going to Spam? Untangle Campaign and Automation Delivery
Diagnose Omnisend campaign and automation delivery problems, including sender domains, channel consent, overlapping workflows, inactive contacts, inbox placement, and rendering.

An Omnisend message can disappear before a mailbox ever decides whether it belongs in the inbox. The store event might not trigger the workflow. The contact may be unsubscribed from email but eligible for SMS. A frequency rule can stop re-entry. Two automations can overlap and send more messages than the customer expected.
Only after those checks does "going to spam" become the right diagnosis.
Quick answer
Use this sequence when Omnisend emails are missing, landing in spam, or converting poorly:
- Identify whether the message is a campaign or an automation email.
- Confirm the store event, trigger, audience filters, and email subscription status.
- Review frequency, skip-contact, exit, and channel settings across overlapping workflows.
- Send from a verified address on the store's authenticated domain.
- Segment inactive contacts without excluding recent purchasers.
- Test the final message across controlled Gmail and Outlook seed inboxes.
- Preview the delivered email on mobile, desktop, webmail, light mode, and dark mode.
- Change the earliest failing stage and repeat the test.
This separates four different outcomes: not selected, skipped by workflow logic, accepted but placed in spam, or delivered with a broken buying experience.
Decide whether the problem is a campaign or a workflow
A scheduled campaign starts with an audience. An automation starts with an event and continues through trigger, filter, delay, split, frequency, exit, and channel rules.
For a campaign, save the final recipient count and inspect included and excluded segments. For an automation, open a known contact and trace the event that should have started the journey.
Check:
- the integration recorded the expected browse, cart, order, or custom event
- the contact entered after the workflow was enabled
- trigger filters use the intended AND/OR logic
- any segment-based rule had time to update
- the contact did not meet an exit condition
- the contact is subscribed to the email channel
- the workflow report describes the message as sent, skipped, or exited
In Omnisend, Skipped can mean the contact entered the automation but did not receive a particular channel message because they were not opted in to that channel. Exited means the contact left the workflow. Neither outcome is an inbox-placement failure.
Inspect workflow overlap before blaming the mailbox
Ecommerce behavior is repetitive. A customer can browse a product, abandon a cart, return to the same item, and purchase while several automations are still active.
Review related workflows together rather than one at a time:
- browse abandonment
- product abandonment
- abandoned cart
- welcome series
- post-purchase follow-up
- customer reactivation
- campaign follow-up or booster
Omnisend's Frequency setting controls how often a contact can re-enter a workflow. The timer begins when the contact enters, not when they exit. If the frequency window is shorter than the full sequence, the same person can begin an overlapping journey.
Use Skip Contacts when a person in one workflow should not begin another. Set frequency at least long enough to cover the workflow and its delays. Review old participants when publishing a change: people already inside can continue under the previous rules if they are allowed to finish.
This is both a customer-experience and deliverability issue. A mailbox may see several technically valid messages, while the customer sees repetitive reminders and reaches for the spam button.
Keep email consent separate from SMS and push
Omnisend tracks subscription status by channel. A customer who can receive an order message or SMS is not automatically eligible for an email promotion.
In each workflow, inspect Workflow Channel Settings and decide what should happen when a contact is not opted into one channel. A non-subscribed contact may skip the email block and continue to a later step if the workflow is configured that way.
Check consent at the source:
- checkout opt-in language
- signup form and double opt-in state
- imported consent and mapped fields
- email, SMS, and push status for a known contact
- custom-event defaults for non-subscribed contacts
Do not solve a low email count by broadening channel permissions beyond what customers agreed to receive.
Authenticate the store's sender identity
Omnisend can provide a shared sending address while setup is incomplete, but its documentation recommends a verified custom domain for normal sending. The From address should be hosted on the same domain that is verified in Omnisend.
Confirm that:
- the From address uses the store's recognizable domain
- Omnisend reports the sender domain authenticated
- SPF and DKIM pass on a received message
- the visible From domain aligns under DMARC
- the domain has one valid SPF policy
- the reply-to address is monitored
- major DNS or sender changes are followed by a gradual warm-up
Authentication proves that Omnisend is authorized to send. It does not guarantee primary-inbox placement, because mailbox providers also consider reputation, consent, complaints, engagement, links, content, and volume.
Use MailSlurp domain monitoring to watch SPF, DKIM, DMARC, MX, blacklist, and certificate changes after the initial setup. That is useful when store infrastructure, support tools, and marketing automation share the same domain.
Define inactivity with purchase behavior included
An address can be quiet in email and still belong to a valuable recent customer. Omnisend's inactivity guidance specifically recommends combining email behavior with purchase activity.
Build an inactive segment using a period that matches the store's send frequency, then exclude people with a recent order or other meaningful activity. Review:
- messages received during the period
- clicks and replies, not only opens
- recent orders and store visits
- source and date of consent
- bounce, unsubscribe, and complaint history
- whether an address was added during a migration without historical engagement data
Omnisend suggests adapting the inactivity window to sending frequency. A weekly sender should not automatically use the same definition as a monthly seasonal shop.
Run one focused reactivation attempt when it makes commercial sense. If there is still no response, unsubscribe the inactive segment instead of paying to expose every future campaign to readers who do not want it.
Test the exact message across providers
Create a MailSlurp inbox placement run, copy its unique marker and seed addresses, and add them to the final Omnisend message. Use the same sender, subject, links, tracking, images, product data, discounts, and footer planned for customers.

Follow the Omnisend inbox placement testing guide for the complete setup, send, and results flow.
Interpret the provider rows before making a change:
- Spam across providers: inspect authentication, permission, inactive exposure, complaints, links, and recent volume changes.
- Gmail Promotions: treat this as categorization, not spam. Promotional ecommerce content may reasonably land there.
- Outlook or Microsoft 365 differs: investigate Microsoft-facing reputation and filtering.
- One seed is missing: confirm subscription status, workflow eligibility, suppression, and send status.
- Placement is healthy: move to product data, links, mobile layout, and checkout continuity.
Keep the test repeatable. A new marker and seed run should use the same campaign configuration after one targeted correction.
Preview the shopping path on real email clients
The Omnisend editor cannot reproduce every inbox engine. The delivered message includes hosted product images, tracking redirects, personalized blocks, prices, discount codes, and footer content that can behave differently on a phone or in Outlook.

Use the Omnisend device rendering guide and check:
- product images retain the intended crop
- price and discount details stay beside the correct item
- the primary CTA is visible and easy to tap
- columns stack in the intended order
- Outlook preserves buttons, spacing, and fonts
- dark mode does not erase the logo or CTA label
- tracked product and checkout URLs resolve correctly
- fallback content works when product data is missing
- unsubscribe and preference links remain visible
A healthy placement result cannot rescue a broken cart URL. A perfect design cannot rescue an automation that repeatedly sends to the wrong contact. Test both stages.
Make one evidence-led correction
Choose the earliest failing point:
- Repair the store event, trigger, filter, or segment timing.
- Correct channel subscription or workflow eligibility.
- Add frequency or skip-contact rules to prevent overlap.
- Verify and align the sender domain.
- Remove genuinely inactive subscribers from broad sends.
- Fix a suspicious link, missing product value, or broken layout.
- Repeat the placement and rendering tests before expanding the audience.
That sequence preserves the useful parts of the campaign while isolating the actual cause.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my Omnisend emails going to spam?
Common causes include an unverified sender domain, poor consent, complaints, inactive contacts, sudden volume changes, suspicious links, and provider-specific reputation. In automations, first confirm that the contact was eligible and the message was sent rather than skipped.
Why did an Omnisend contact enter an automation but miss the email?
Check Workflow Channel Settings and the contact's email subscription status. A contact can enter the journey but skip an email block when not opted into that channel.
How do I stop Omnisend automations from overlapping?
Set an appropriate Frequency window on the trigger and use Skip Contacts when participation in another workflow should prevent entry. Make the frequency window longer than the journey when re-entry would create duplicate messages.
Does Delivered mean the primary inbox?
No. It normally means the recipient's mail system accepted the message. The provider can still place it in Promotions, Spam, Junk, or another folder.
Which MailSlurp checks should I use with Omnisend?
Use Omnisend inbox placement testing for provider folder results, Omnisend device rendering for received-client layouts, and domain monitoring for ongoing sender checks.
